When Sunbathers Ran From Danger, Popular Image Shows Beach Patrol Dashing ‘All Out’ To the Scene.

Alexandra Ching, someone who has spent her entire life as resident of Bondi, views the iconic coast as her own backyard. On that particular Sunday evening, she, along with numerous neighbors, detected pops echoing around the neighbourhood.

“We all thought the same, but I reasoned it was daylight and no one could see them,” Ching recounts. She left her home, she observed people “pouring up Bondi Road”. The faces on display made it clear a crisis was unfolding.

As she stood on the road, talking to a pair who had hurried up the incline still dripping wet, she heard someone coming up at her rear. It was a lifeguard, sprinting in the direction of Bondi without shoes from the nearby Tamarama beach – roughly 1.5km – while carrying a life-saving kit.

“I heard someone say ‘excuse me’, and turning my head I just saw this blur of blue,” she recalls. “He was zooming past. He was alone heading in the path that the crowd was trying to flee, carrying that large equipment and unshod … He moved at something that surely every part of you would tell you to go in the other direction.

“Just no hesitation, but just totally maximum effort sprinting.”

An Iconic Image of Bravery In the Wake of Chaos

The photograph taken by Ching of the rescuer, now known to be Jackson Doolan, was widely shared as one of many acts of courage in the wake of the violent incident.

Andy Reid, a second lifeguard, explained that Doolan, referred to as “Jacko”, hurried from Tamarama beach to assist the remaining crew at Bondi, as well as to aid emergency personnel, police and ambulance crews treating numerous the injured.

Local Outpouring and Assistance

Doolan’s story was just one of many to come out of the community, with the patrol base beside the site of the incident transforming into a temporary hospital. Accounts show that other team members were also seen responding bravely, for instance going into the ocean to rescue people who were struggling.

Following the events, messages of gratitude were shared. An online statement conveyed gratitude for the individuals who demonstrated that “compassion will always triumph over hatred”.

The group of lifeguards later shared a message, explaining they were “still trying to comprehend what occurred”.

“Our thanks go out to all for your thoughtful sentiments and solidarity. We are overwhelmed by the kindness shown towards our team,” the group commented. “Eventually, we will tell our tales in the hope that it supports those impacted.”

Council Praise

Waverley council, the administrative organization that employs many professional lifeguards, remarked that the staff performed exceptionally from the moment the incident started until late that night.

“There have been so many moving accounts, but the viral photo of Jackson Doolan, running from Tamarama to Bondi with a defibrillator so he could help assist the injured is incredible,” stated a mayor.

“Our lifeguards show altruism every day in maintaining the safety of our internationally renowned shores secure for the public, but what we witnessed on that day should be highly praised.

“During this time of sorrow and come to terms with the atrocity of this brutal and barbaric terrorist attack, I think it is crucial that we focus on just how much light we have observed in the face of such hatred.”
