Teacher Killed and 25 Female Students Kidnapped in Firefight at Educational Institution in Nigeria
Gun-wielding individuals have killed a teacher and seized a minimum of 25 learners in an assault against a female high school in Nigeria's northwestern region, authorities have confirmed.
The gang of attackers invaded the Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School in Kebbi State's Maga area at roughly 4 in the morning local time on Monday, authorities reported.
The attackers "engaged police personnel on duty in a gun duel" before climbing over the boundary wall and taking the pupils captive from their living quarters, according to a statement.
A school employee was fatally shot while defending the students. Another staff member suffered bullet injuries and is now undergoing medical care.
Witnesses reported a sizeable number of assailants, known locally as bandits, who arrived firing sporadically to generate terror.
Community members told reporters that the attackers afterwards forced a group of female students into surrounding rural areas.
The law enforcement confirmed they had positioned "extra specialized police forces, in coordination with armed forces and local protection units" to the area.
A coordinated search and rescue operation is presently taking place in adjacent wooded areas and potential getaway paths.
In the past few years, educational institutions in Nigeria's north have become frequent targets for militant organizations, who frequently execute kidnappings to demand financial compensation or gain negotiating power with authorities.
The attack in Kebbi State underscores the continuing safety emergency afflicting the area, causing relatives in Maga in a situation of anxious fatigue as they anticipate and pray for their young ones' unharmed reappearance.
Security crisis in Nigeria's northern territories has escalated dramatically in recent months, with learning centers experiencing the greatest impact of the conflict.
